Bridges

At Vector, we take our work very seriously, knowing that lives depend on the structures we fabricate, including bridges, ferry ramps, and structural supports for bridges.

Unwin bridge

The Unwin Avenue Bridge serves as a crucial route for the old Toronto Ship Docks, where the majority of salt and gravel is unloaded. Following an unexpected breakdown at Cherry Street, traffic was diverted to this aging bridge, which was already nearing the end of its lifespan. The increased load of heavy traffic began to strain the structure. Vector Industrial Group was entrusted with designing and installing replacement deck panels for the damaged bridge.

  • This project presented several challenges, including the absence of previous shop drawings, no downtime to take precise measurements, and the need to perform emergency repairs to strengthen the bridge before the scheduled work.
  • Our team employed innovative methods to measure and inspect the existing structures. The replacement panels were designed for rapid installation within a 24-hour window, minimizing site welding. Furthermore, the City of Toronto requested that the connection details remain consistent with the original design, despite having no information on the existing connections.
  • Due to the urgency of the repair, a swift turnaround was essential. Vector efficiently completed the entire process, including design, fabrication, and installation, within approximately three weeks. This achievement was made possible through strategic partnerships and in-house capabilities.
  • Vector Industrial Group’s unique and efficient design approach, the critical project was completed over a single weekend—nearly twice as fast as the City of Toronto had anticipated.

Lagoon City bridge

Located in the peaceful township of Ramara, Lagoon City relies on this pedestrian bridge as a vital part of its community. However, the foundation was found to be sinking, posing a significant safety risk to users.

  • Given the urgency, critical reinforcement work needed to be completed within a short timeframe. Additionally, the new structure had to seamlessly match the existing bridge paint, presenting the challenge of blending new components with the old.
  • Vector completed the entire project, including design, fabrication, and installation, in just three weeks. This rapid turnaround was made possible through our strategic partnerships and in-house expertise

Billy bishop airport ferry ramp

Billy Bishop Airport, situated on Toronto Island, is a vital transportation hub connected to the mainland exclusively via ferry and a pedestrian tunnel. The timely completion of repairs was paramount, as any delays would result in the suspension of all flights, due to the lack of vehicle access for critical services such as fuel, food, and maintenance.

  • This project necessitated a bespoke approach due to the exceedingly tight timeline for repairs. With no shop drawings or measurements provided by Ports Toronto, the Vector team was compelled to employ unconventional methods to adapt to any unforeseen challenges.
  • The installation itself presented further obstacles, as our crews were required to operate atop jet floats, navigating the turbulent waters. The interplay of wind and waves compounded the difficulty of executing the installation
  • Despite the stringent timeline set by the City, Vector successfully fabricated the steel within a mere two weeks. The installation, scheduled over a weekend, involved round-the-clock efforts, with our installation team delivering exceptional results under the most demanding circumstances.
